How Braille works

Braille represents each character with a “cell” of up to six raised dots arranged in two columns of three. Different dot patterns map to different letters and numbers; a special number sign precedes digits. This tool outputs Grade 1 (uncontracted) Braille — a direct letter-for-letter representation shown using Unicode Braille glyphs.

Frequently asked questions

Is this contracted (Grade 2) Braille?+

No. This is Grade 1 (letter-for-letter) Braille, which is the simplest and most universal form. Grade 2 uses contractions that vary by language.

Can blind users read this output?+

The Unicode Braille glyphs are visual representations. For tactile reading you need a Braille embosser or refreshable Braille display.
